PAPUA NEW GUINEA
EXPEDITION
AN UNMOTORISED CROSSING
Route
The expedition started at the most northerly point of mainland PNG, Vanimo, walking 280 miles south from a dirt road into thick jungle where they fought to gain each inch of progress. After a month of trudging, the team hit the Star Mountains, a range that at times, turned the expedition into an alpine style climb. Patrick Hutton and Richard Johnson then descended the immense Hindenburg wall, a treacherous limestone karst ridge at the center of the island.
Once safely through the mountains, the team located the Fly river, built a boat and navigated 550 miles of the river, avoiding tidal bores, storms & crocs on their descent. Daru, a small town on an island just south of PNG, marked the end of the expedition.
