PAPUA NEW GUINEA
EXPEDITION
AN UNMOTORISED CROSSING
While the main danger from stage one was the usual jungle obstacles (insects, thick foliage, difficult terrain, humidity, infection and possibly the occasional snake), stage 2 carried the same dangers as well as those assosiated with climbing out of the jungle into the Star Mountains.
Patrick Hutton and Richard Johnson had to descend the 'Hindenburg wall', a rarely visited block of mountains that presented sheer cliffs and harbored possibly hundreds of unknown species. Finding a way over this range was perhaps the pair's biggest challenge. Climbing equipment, was not carried due to weight. The team had to scramble down sharp limestone using vines found in the bush as climbing rope.
Having successfully completed stage 2, the team's next task was to find the Fly River and start the final stage of the expedition.
