Expeditions can be hugely selfish things.
They can strain relationships back at home and, if handled incorrectly, project an archaic colonial hangover to the host country's local population. Whilst the team do not pretend that their motives for this expedition are purely altruistic, they believe that supporting and raising awareness for ChildFund, can truly benefit the local population.
In the remote villages of PNG, access to medical services and essential vaccinations for babies are often out of reach. It's common for families to be hours away from the nearest hospital or clinic.
To enable every child in these remote communities to be protected from illness and disease, ChildFund has introduced immunisation patrols – mobile clinics that travel into remote villages with medical staff and supplies to immunise babies and toddlers. Included in the patrols are baby health checks, growth monitoring and malnutrition checks, as well as antenatal care for mothers and family planning services.
By reaching their £10,000 target, the team will have raised 75% of ChildFund's cash for their PNG inoculation patrol programs.
