PAPUA NEW GUINEA
EXPEDITION
AN UNMOTORISED CROSSING
2010: Amazon River,
Source to Sea
After 2 years of meticulously laying plans, Patrick and three friends found their way from the source of the Amazon to the Atlantic Ocean. The expedition was an epic six month 4200 mile journey that took them from the frigid beauty of the Peruvian high andes to the equatorial Brazilian coastline.
Along the way they had to trek 300km at extreme altitude carrying 85 pounds each, white water raft grade 4 rapids, canoe thousands of kilometres, build a river worthy catamaran, row thousands more before finally going under power to the Atlantic after being cut short by the Brazilian Marines, who took an intense dislike for their 'homemade' boat.
As well as the physical hardship of constant rowing, paddling or walking, they also had to deal with the incessant sand flys by day, mosquitoes by night, variability of mountain or jungle environments along with the ever present threat of river pirates and angry indigenous locals who held the team up at bow and arrow point on more than one occasion.
Despite mishaps such as their boat sinking, team members nearly drowning, dodging rockfalls in the Andes and nearly getting shot, each member of the team got to the Atlantic ocean a stronger and more confident man.
